Creating a Beautiful Victorian Bonnet

Woman in Victorian Bonnet

Millinery Workshop
Wired buckram frame/ Flat pattern method

Saturday, March 27, 2010
10 am - 5 pm

Sacramento City Dry Goods is proud to present a millinery workshop for those looking to learn buckram hat making. Starting with a flat bonnet pattern (provided), you’ll construct a wired, buckram bonnet frame, learn how to cover it with fashion fabric, and then line it. There will be three pattern choices: 1840/50’s Cottage bonnet, 1850’s-1865 Low bonnet, Mid 1860’s Spoon bonnet. The class objective is for the attendees to learn buckram millinery techniques so they can continue to make hats on their own from any flat hat pattern. In addition, we will chat about bonnet history, and if time allows, trimming.

The instructor for our class is Lynne Taylor, an accomplished milliner with a love of teaching others the beautiful art of millinery. She is a schooled milliner who enjoys creating new hats and restoring old. Her new hats are historically inspired, due in part to a long love of vintage fashion. In 1999, while attending a millinery class, Lynne was introduced to historical costuming via the Greater Bay Area Costume Guild (GBACG) www.gbacg.org. Since then, she has developed a love of sewing historical costumes and researching various aspects of costuming. Lynne served as the GBACG Workshop Coordinator from 2002 through 2006. Currently, she shares her knowledge and expertise by teaching workshops on millinery and related topics. She also does millinery on commission, creating custom one of a kind ladies hats and bonnets. She resides in Sacramento, Ca. with her son and two cats.

Cost for this workshop is $75.00. Price includes: hand-outs, pattern, buckram (foundation material), and the wire needed for one bonnet. Sign-up at Sacramento Dry Goods, 110 L Street, Old Sacramento, Ca. 95814. Deadline for sign-up is March 14th. Attendees will receive a supply list March 15th via email. Students need to have good hand sewing skills, and to supply their own portable sewing machine with zigzag setting. Attendees should know how to operate their sewing machine. Class size is limited.
