Man in Top Hat Woman in Riding Hat

Sacramento Dry Goods and Laughing Moon Mercantile are proud to present a Millinery workshop for those looking to learn the basics of buckram hat making. We’ll chat a little about top hat history. Then you’ll start working with a flat, top hat pattern (provided). You’ll construct a wired, buckram hat frame, learn how to cover it with fashion fabric, and line it. The pattern for this class is early to Mid-Victorian. You can make it as tall as you like! Ladies have the option of making a riding hat. The objective of this class is for the attendees to learn correct buckram millinery techniques so they may continue to make hats on their own, from any flat hat pattern.

Lynne Taylor The instructor for our class is Lynne Taylor, an accomplished milliner with a love of teaching others this challenging art. Lynne is a schooled milliner and loves to create new hats and restore old. Her new hats are historically inspired, due in part to a long love of vintage fashion. In 1999 while attending a millinery class, Lynne was introduced to Costuming via the Greater Bay Area Costume Guild since that time she’s developed a love of sewing historical costumes and researching various aspects of the costuming genre. Currently Lynne shares her knowledge and expertise by teaching workshops on millinery and related topics. Lynne served as the GBACG Workshop Coordinator from 2002 through 2006. She is a member of GBACG and the Sac. Art Deco Society and attends numerous costumed events each year. In 2008 she was entered in the Historical Masquerade at Costume Con 26. The group she was in won “Best in Show” with a representation of nine dresses from a painting called “The Empress Eugenie and her Maids of Honor” by Winterhalter 1856. They are now honored as Masters. She and her son along with two cats Lu Lu and Moe reside in Sacramento, Ca.

Cost for this workshop is $75.00. Price includes hand-outs, pattern, the foundation materials and wire needed for one top hat. Attendees will receive a supply list after registering for the class. Students need to have good hand sewing skills, and need to supply their own portable sewing machine (with zigzag setting), attendees should know how to operate their machine.
